Dr Adi Paterson

Advisory Board Member

Adi is a distinguished figure in Nuclear Engineering, Science, and Technology, with a rich history in energy policy and research. With roots in South Africa, he led significant divisions at the CSIR and played a pivotal role in the post-Apartheid Department of Science and Technology. His leadership was instrumental in the National Research and Development Strategy's implementation. In 2007, he joined the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor Company as COO.


From 2009 to 2020, Adi led the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and under his guidance, ANSTO developed the world’s first Synroc plant. He also facilitated crucial agreements between Australia and international nuclear programs, such as iTER and the Generation-IV International Forum Treaty.


Adi sits on the boards of Advancell Isotopes and HB11 Fusion, advocating for low-carbon nuclear energy in Australia. He has been an advisory board member at UNSW's Engineering Faculty since 2010. Adi Adi has a BSc and PhD from the University of Cape Town and a PMD from Harvard Business School. He was awarded a Doctor of Science honoris causa by the University of Wollongong (2017); is an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Engineering of Australia, a Fellow of ATSE, RSNSW and a Member of the South African Academy of Engineering.
